Teaching Statement

A classroom should be a place for dialogue, expression of ideas and acceptance of others. Students have a large role in the environment of the classroom, therefore, a large role in their own learning as well as others’ learning which is why I work to view students as their whole selves. As I gain students’ respect and trust, students often take on more responsibility for their education and have an increasingly active role in the development of their knowledge and skills. Applying that knowledge starts with a small act of awareness and leads to the decisions you make as a teacher. Change takes time, but I would rather take chances to find success with my students, provide them with emotional support, and encourage them to find their own voice in their endeavors. Taking the time to ask your students to be honest and vulnerable with you illustrates that emotions are a powerful force and that you are willing to accept them at all the stages in their lives. In my experiences working with teachers, the ones that showed they cared for us and the ones that asked us questions, not just about school, but about life too, were the ones that had a strong scaffolding and emotional support aspects in their classrooms. Every student has different skill sets, different preferences of learning, and needs. This is what makes a classroom thrive and helps the students to learn how to accept others and offer help to those who need it. As a teacher, you have to be willing to view the failures and successes authentically. I teach because I want to encourage students to have an appreciation for science and develop their critical thinking.
